Oldlands surged to the top of the table after a convincing derby win over Cam.

On losing the toss at Abwell, the visitors found themselves batting first and soon in trouble at 13-2.

Stuart Newman (28) and Graham Brown (20*) were the main contributors in attempting to lay the foundations on which a significant innings could ultimately be built, but with wickets falling regularly around them their efforts proved to be a little isolated.

Newman in particular gave indication of his quality with some powerful strokeplay, before edging a beautiful delivery from Mike Colborn to ‘keeper Tom Paterson.

Brown showed plenty of fighting spirit and looked in little trouble before eventually being left stranded in an innings that could well have produced a much more challenging team total.

However, Cam fell well short of a par score, with the innings quite tellingly coming to an end with 15 unused overs still available.

Sean Rocke (4-38) and Colborn (3-42) led the attack well, superbly backed up by eight crucial catches, in particular notable efforts from Colborn, George Pennington, Brad Thomas and Jason Savage.

Oldlands’ opening batsmen were dismissed by good full length and straight bowling from Peter Holder to give Cam some early hope.

This proved to be short lived as Savage (25), Rocke (31*) and Rob Frost (17*) quickly put the conditions into perspective to see the their side quite comfortably home with 19 overs in hand.

Oldlands will look forward to the squad being strengthened over the coming weeks by the return of key players Dave Walton, Nick Grove, Steve Heaven and Dave Brookes, but first they travel to high-flying Newent on Saturday in good spirits for a key game.
