ON SATURDAY, it is the T20 International against Sri Lanka at Bristol.
This will be a good and full day as England Ladies play Australia in the morning.
Fran Wilson from Minety is in the England squad. Go early and enjoy the day.
If you are not going, and watch on TV, look how well the ground at Bristol is adapted for the extra supporters. Ground administrator Peter Hall does a fine job, but he always worries TV will show up any little error. It never does!
Mrs Light watched some of the Rose Bowl Test on TV, noting the extreme, often outrageous fancy dress costumes. Now I know why you always went as Wurzel Gummidge, was her response.
While England are at Bristol, Gloucestershire play Middlesex at Uxbridge - a Friends Life t20 match on Sunday followed by a four-day County Championship one.
It is an easy ground to get to. Take the M40 and shortly after the M25, Uxbridge is signposted. The ground is small, friendly and devoid of facilities. My first memory of watching cricket there is of Martin Moxon, then coach of Yorkshire, driving to a nearby Sainsburys to collect sandwiches for his team. You have been warned!
The Gloucestershire team at The Oval for the County Championship game against Surrey this week boasted just five of last year’s team - Dent, Taylor, A Gidman, Marshall and Lewis.
The match was a real test for our young side - strong opposition, a good wicket and a Test Match ground – but we came through for a fine win.
Both sides take a long time to bowl their overs - oh for Cook, Allen, Mortimore, Lake or Lock!
In between the Oval and Bristol, Mrs Light and I are thrilled to be invited to Lechlade CC’s splendid event at The Four Pillars Hotel. This cricket club makes things happen, on and off the field.
The t20 matches at Gloucester went well. Only a significant wedding anniversary kept me away, but I have heard plenty of good things about the cricket, notably young lion Cockbain batting with blazing brilliance and then catching Kevin Pietersen, whose surprise appearance was a bonus for the Gloucester crowd.
A victory over Surrey is always sweet and significantly this was obtained by a reliance on spin. Young, Williamson and, of course, Murali have been our best bowlers in the competition.
Cheltenham looms and good news! The Montpelier Wine Bar marquee returns.
This is the Gloucestershire equivalent of Ascot’s Royal Enclosure. Being there makes our recent wretched Cheltenham cricket bearable.
* Plenty of good news is emerging from Forest Green. A good squad is being assembled and there will be proper pre-season preparation.
Many of the players are young and with the potential to get better. And, of course, working with them is manager Hockaday's strength.
A central midfielder is needed as Chris Allen is not yet the finished article. I would have been delighted if Gary Warren could have joined from Newport but he will command a substantial fee. He was outstanding as centre half against us last season. Mid-table is a realistic aim.
At least three fans' forums please and some patience from everyone - at least until November!
