EMILY Smith and Chris Ashworth took part in the Dundry Thunderer Race.

The course is about 10k over country roads, lanes and tracks.

Smith finished 36th in 51.12, first in her category and third lady. Ashworth came 48th in 55.27.

Two days later Smith ran in Man v Horse, 22-mile off-road course that starts in Llanwrtyd Wells.

More than 300 solo runners, 111 relay teams of three, and 50 of their four-legged rivals took part in the 31st event.

The only occasions when men have won were in 2004 and 2007.

The race takes competitors through farm tracks, footpaths, open moorland and tarmac and attracts thousands of spectators.

Horses are required to go through three vetting stations - at the start, the midway point and the end of the race and if they fail any checks they are disqualified.

The runners began the race 15 minutes before the horses set off.

The race was won by Betty Gordon on Next in Line Grangeway, in 02:08:37, 17 minutes ahead of the first man.

The first woman home was Jenny Horne, of Aberystwyth, in 2hr 46m 41s.

Smith, with a fine run, was not far behind in 96th place with a time of 03:07:56 to finish as the third lady overall, beating some of the equine competitors.

The Burnham-on-Sea sprint triathlon took place recently, comprising of a 500m pool swim, 20k cycle and 5k beach run.

Six Dursley and District athletes took part in the 25th anniversary of this event.

All of them had good swims, and then had to battle the very gusty winds in driving rain on a very testing course.

They returned back safe to transition two to start the wet and sometimes muddy run, down the beach around the golf course and back into an ever stronger head wind to the finish.

They all competed well, with a very tight race between Mel Williams and Leanne Kilby followed by a great effort by Moira Woodward in her first triathlon..
