THREE late wickets by Danielle Wyatt secured a 22-run win for England over Australia in the Women’s Twenty20 international at Bristol today.
Australia were never far from the required run rate in pursuit of 137 to win, but they lost wickets regularly before spinner Wyatt (3-10) had top scorer Meg Lanning caught behind by Sarah Taylor for 33 off her first ball and then removed Sarah Coyte and captain Jodie Fields in her following over.
Wyatt then ran out Clea Smith as Australia were all out for 114 in the 19th over.
The highlight of England’s innings was an opening partnership of 59 between Charlotte Edwards and Laura Marsh before the latter was bowled attempting to sweep Erin Osborne for 28 off 23 balls in the ninth over.
Edwards hit a run-a-ball 43 but was frustrated when driving an Osborne delivery to Alex Blackwell for a simple catch at cover.
England looked like they had lost their way a bit but gained some crucial late momentum as Sarah Taylor hit 25 off 22 balls and Arran Brindle struck an unbeaten 15 to help them reach 136-6.
The men's T20 international between England and Sri Lanka starts at 2.30pm. Thilina Kandamby has won the toss and decided to bowl first. Updates on this website later.
