IRISH teenager Graeme McCarter starred on his senior debut at Lord's to help Gloucestershire record their first CB40 victory of the season.

The 19-year-old seamer took 3-41, including the scalp of England international Joe Denly, with man of the match Ed Young claiming 3-26 as Middlesex were reduced to 157-8 in a game reduced to 26 overs per side after rain delayed the start of play.

Trialist Benny Howell continued to press his claims for a contract by hitting an unbeaten 45 off 48 balls to guide Gloucestershire to victory with 22 balls and five wickets to spare.

After starting their campaign with a shock home defeat against the Netherlands, Gloucestershire skipper Alex Gidman was pleased with the way his side bounced back.

He said: "The result against the Netherlands was hard to take and maybe we were a bit rusty, although that is certainly not an excuse.

"We knew what we had to work on and came back hard, executing our plans well and striking the ball really well in the power play overs.

"That laid the foundation for victory. This is how we want to play in 40-over cricket and now we have a result to build on."

Gloucestershire welcome Yorkshire to Bristol for a County Championship game starting Wednesday, before facing Leicestershire at the County Ground in a CB40 clash on Sunday.
