WOTTON Rovers brought home the silverware from this year’s Stroud Charity Cup Final after a great battle against high-flyers Tredworth Tigers. The game had previously been scheduled for an evening kick-off but was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch and played on Saturday afternoon at Stonehouse FC in front of a crowd in excess of 300. Tredworth started brightly but Rovers battled hard to keep things level with great performances at the back by Steve Bennett, Nicky Tomlin, Shaun Buckley and Marcus Watkins.
Midfielders Lee Terrett and Paul Bleaken started to get on top and were soon creating chances for the strikers. With superb energy on both flanks Wotton’s wide men Dan Thornhill and Tay Jones caused the Tredworth full backs problems.
Wotton’s best chance of the first half fell to striker Mike Walker, whose superb shot was only just saved by the fingertips of Tredworth’s goalkeeper.
Rovers striker Simon Jackson had an outstanding game and he broke the deadlock on 50 minutes when he coolly finished past the stranded Tigers keeper.
Jackson was unleashed again down the right flank in the 75th minute, and he superbly beat the out coming keeper as he fired in at the far post.
Wotton held on for a well deserved victory and lifted the club’s first trophy for a long time.
