GLOUCESTERSHIRE County Cricket Club’s most successful ever captain, a former world champion boxer and several ex-Bristol Rovers and City players will play in a charity football match at Coalpit Heath FC on Saturday.

Mark Alleyne, who played ten one-day internationals for England, and Frampton Cotterell-based fighter Glenn Catley will play for a celebrity side against Coalpit Heath, as part of the club’s fourth annual Festival of Football and Fun Weekend in aid of Cancer Research UK.

MCC head coach Alleyne captained Gloucestershire to seven one-day trophies in five years and was also head coach between 2004 and 2007.

Catley was crowned WBC Super Middleweight Champion in 2000 when he beat Markus Beyer in Germany.

Former Bristol Rovers players Lewis Hogg, Jeff Meacham and Lee Archer will join up with old City rivals Chris Honor and Alex Russell amongst other stars including broadcaster Jed Pitman in the celebrity side.

The weekend long festival includes tournaments for local under-7s, U8s, U9s, U10s, U11s, U12s and U13s at Hortham Lane in Almondsbury, starting at 9am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

Coalpit Heath chairman Alistair Higgins said: “This is our fourth Festival of Football which gives young players the chance to play the beautiful game in a relaxed family atmosphere and also raises lots of money for Cancer Research UK. “We look forward to welcoming local clubs from across the Bristol area and their supporters for a great weekend of football.

“We’re also thrilled that so many celebrities have offered to play in our celebrity match on Saturday afternoon. “We hope to see a great crowd cheering us on and I’m sure it’ll be a match to remember.”

Jack FM are doing an outside broadcast from the site and are hosting the celebrity football match, which kicks off at 12.45pm.

The festival welcomes a fun entertainment park, including water walking, crooked house and round about rides, bouncy castles, test of strength, face painting and other fun games for the family.

Entry to the festival is £2 per car, which includes a programme and car parking.
